ALLAHABAD: Moharram marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain and his followers, who were slain in Karbala in Iraq. During the month, Muslims desist from celebration and wear black clothes.
Religious scholar Rizwan Haider Rizvi said that Muharram is period of mourning. It is the first month of Islamic calendar. Imam Husain stood up against injustices more than 1,400 years ago.

He and his 72 companions went down fighting against the evil forces. The Karbala tragedy marks the greatest sacrifice for the sake of God, he said.
President of the managing committee of Dargah Maula Ali Syed Azadar Husain said there are 40 imambaras and more than 250 azakhanas, where Muharram programme are held. Many processions would be taken out in the city from various localities. Convenor of Allahabad Muharram Jhula Committee Ghulam Rasool said the processions will be taken out on 9th and 10th of Moharram.
Meanwhile, the residents of Muslim dominated areas like Rani Mandi, Dariabad, Bakshi Bazaar and Kareli have urged the district administration for ensuring proper cleanliness and street-lighting.
The power department has been urged to ensure regular supply. Many streetlights are also not functional on the road on which procession will be taken out. There is one electric pole in front of Dargah Hazrat Abbas in Dariyabad locality which has tilted and on the verge of collapse. However, no initiative has been taken to repair it.
The district administration has held a meeting with the Moharram committees to discuss the arrangements for processions.
